Who do you actually call for a broken water heater?

A plumber, but that covers three quite different businesses, and which one you call changes both the price and whether you replace something you did not need to.

A plumbing technician in uniform arriving at a residential front door

A plumber, in almost every case. But that answer is less useful than it sounds, because “plumber” covers three quite different businesses, and which one you call changes both the price and whether you end up replacing something you did not need to.

The three types you will find

The general plumbing company

Drains, fixtures, repipes, and water heaters somewhere in the mix. They will do the job. The trade off is that a water heater is one of thirty things they handle, so the diagnosis tends to be quicker and the truck is less likely to have your part on it. Second visits are common.

The national franchise

Answers at any hour, arrives quickly, and prices accordingly. Genuinely useful at 2am. Their technicians usually work to a script that leans toward replacement, because replacement is simpler to standardise across hundreds of branches.

The specialist

Works on water heaters and little else. Arrives knowing the likely fault from the symptom, carries the common parts, and finishes in one visit more often. That is what we are, and the reason it matters is not pride, it is that specialisation changes the diagnosis rather than just the marketing.

What to have ready when you call

  • The age, if you know it. If not, we can read it off the serial number.
  • Gas or electric, and whether it is a tank or tankless.
  • What it is actually doing. No hot water at all is a different fault from water that runs cold early.
  • Whether there is water on the floor, and if so, where it is coming from. A fitting is a repair. The body of the tank is not.

With those four things, a decent shop can narrow it considerably over the phone. If someone will not discuss anything without a visit, that tells you something.

Questions worth asking before you book

  1. Is the price flat, or hourly?
  2. Will you give me the repair cost and the replacement cost side by side?
  3. Are you licensed, and do you pull permits?
  4. What happens if the repair does not hold?

When it is not a plumber

If an electric unit is tripping its breaker repeatedly, stop resetting it and get an electrician or a plumber who will actually test the elements. Repeated resets on a fault are how a small problem becomes a bigger one.
