Can you shower or do laundry without hot water?
You can, but you almost certainly do not want to. The practical version, for the day or two before someone can get out to you.

You can, but you almost certainly do not want to, and for laundry it depends entirely on what you are washing.
Here is the practical version, for the day or two before someone can get out to you.
Showering
Cold water in Northern Utah runs roughly 50 to 60 degrees in summer and can drop into the 40s through winter, colder still at elevation. That is not bracing, it is genuinely unpleasant and, for older people or anyone with a heart condition, worth avoiding.
The workable middle ground most households land on:
- Boil and basin. A kettle or a large pot into a sink or a bucket, mixed to temperature. Slow, but it works for washing.
- Shortest possible rinse. Wet, turn off, soap, rinse. Under a minute of actual water.
- A gym, a pool, or a relative. Genuinely the answer for most people for a night.
One caution. Do not heat large volumes on a stove and carry them upstairs. Scald injuries from carrying pans of near boiling water are more common than people expect.
Laundry
This one is more forgiving than people assume. Modern detergents are formulated to work in cold water, and for everyday clothes a cold wash is fine. Colours actually hold better.
Where cold falls short:
- Oil or grease stains, which need warm water to lift properly.
- Bedding and towels after illness, where the temperature is doing sanitising work.
- Cloth nappies, same reason.
Everything else can wait for cold, or wait full stop.
One thing worth knowing if this keeps happening rather than being a one off: a tank that runs out early, rather than never heating at all, is usually a broken dip tube or a failed lower element rather than a dying heater. That is covered in why you run out of hot water so fast.
Dishes
A dishwasher heats its own water internally, so it will run regardless. It uses more energy doing so, but it works. Hand washing in cold water with detergent gets dishes clean enough; it is the grease that suffers.
Before you settle in for a cold week
Check whether it is actually the heater. Two things worth ruling out because they cost nothing:
- The thermostat setting, in case someone turned it down.
- On gas, whether the pilot is simply out. Relighting it is often all that is needed, and the instructions are usually printed on the unit.
If neither applies, it is worth knowing that most of what causes total loss of hot water is a part rather than a tank. Thermocouples, gas control valves and elements are all repairs, and most repairs run $225 to $900.
How long you should expect to wait
Most repair calls across Weber, Davis and Morgan County are seen the same day. A leaking tank we treat as urgent regardless of the hour. If you are rationing kettles, call and tell us what it is doing, because water heater repair in Ogden is usually a same day fix rather than a week of cold showers.
Not sure which applies to yours? Tell us what it is doing.

Most repair calls are seen the same day. Replacements are usually next day, sooner if the tank is leaking.
